Creative Craft Class

Wednesday 10.00am – 12.30pm (term-time only)

Come and join our friendly class and learn how to make contemporary crafts such as embroidery, patchwork and quilting, knitting and beaded jewellery making.

We also make fabric bags and purses, cushions, tea towels, oven gloves and necklaces. At the end of the year Westminster Kingsway college organises an exhibition where students can see their work on show. Every year we have an educational visit to a gallery or museum to see traditional and contemporary textiles.

Many of the women attending the class come from cultures with a rich textile tradition. The women are encouraged to work on their own ideas as well as on projects set by the tutor. The atmosphere of the class is informal and friendly. This class is run in partnership with Camden Adult Community Learning.

The craft course is open to women of all ages and abilities with special emphasis on women with physical and mental health difficulties, women with caring responsibilities and women aged 60 plus.

Naomi, a member of the class explains how much the class has helped her:

“I joined this class last year as it stops me from thinking about my problems. Being creative has boosted my confidence and I continue to work on my embroidery at home which passes the time and gives me a new interest. I am enjoying learning new embroidery techniques, and benefiting from the tutor who has a wide range of knowledge. She is very patient and encouraging. I enjoy chatting with the other students, as we have something to talk about, and because we have our crafts in common. It is a very friendly class. I was able to share my knowledge of a new technique with another student. I enjoy looking at the other students’ work and appreciating what they’ve done. I would strongly recommend this class to anyone who is trying to learn a new skill.”
